It’s a fairly well-known story that Lance Armstrong played a significant role in the development of the Waffle. Its origins relate to his inglorious days romping through Europe eating what is known as the Stroopwafel. If you’ve never had an authentic one, you’re missing out for sure. However, most are far to large and calorically dense to consume at once on a bike. Jumping from that basic design, though, Honey Stinger created a miniaturized version that not only hits the mark on taste, but makes for a great solid race fuel alternative. What’s even better, if you don’t like a flavor, you’ve got plenty of choices, though I’ll admit, while I have some favorites, I like any flavor there.
Like the energy bars, everyone’s tastes are different. However, in my opinion, Waffles are the most universally palatable nutrition product I’ve seen. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like them, and many who love them. The texture can vary based on weather, being more chewy in the winter, and warm moist in the summer. I prefer to fold them for easier eating, but they’re equally good as a snack with tea or coffee! With seven flavors on offer, here’s my flavor preference, but the top-tier is a tough choice:
- Caramel: Its caramel, what’s not too like. Tastes like caramel, but not too sweet.
- Ginger Snap: Tastes like a ginger snap cookie, but a bit more satisfying.
- Lemon: Yeah, this one is a winner, and my wife’s favorite. The light lemon tartness is perfect with the honey.
- Strawberry: Reminds me of strawberry sugar wafers. Very tasty indeed.
- Honey: The original is still a keeper, too. Unlike a real stroopwafel, which can be very sweet and chewy, the original waffle is a great snack on a cold day.
- Chocolate: I like chocolate, but to be honest, if you’re expecting chocolate bar chocolate or cocoa, you’ll be disappointed. It lacks the chocolate pop, but still makes a great snack.
- Vanilla: Poor vanilla. Its not that it tastes bad; hardly. Its just that, well, there just not a lot exciting about vanilla to separate it from the original.
I really love the balance between the energy bar and waffle. In hot weather they’re easy to eat and digest, and they don’t melt! Moreover, for early morning races, I love pairing the waffle and bar together to get in 400 solid kcal before start time. Overall, I would rate these best of line overall, hard to avoid indulging in the winter. I know you won’t be disappointed either!
